Trainings & Workshops

ASCF provides Workshops and Trainings to increase the capacity of parents to participate effectively in achieving quality educational outcomes and the full benefit of IDEA for their child with special needs and to professionals involved with these families to work with parents in helping the students each their full potential.

~Parents, Caregivers and Professionals are invited to attend and participate

~Stipends may be available for qualifying parents who attend workshops

~Professional Development Credits are available

~All are held at the Hillcrest Community Center, West Milford, NJ

~All are free of charge

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 ~ 7pm

No Child Left Behind
This workshop provides an in-depth presentation of the legal requirements of NCLB. It increases understanding of parental participation and helps participants gain awareness of the ways that the law addresses the needs of students with disabilities.

Parent / Professional Collaboration
Partnerships take work and trust. This Workshop focuses on collaborative teaming, communication, and advocacy. It is specifically designed for parents and educators or health professionals to learn these skills together.

Basic Rights in Special Education
This workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities as parents of children with special needs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the New Jersey Code, and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act. Parents learn to identify their dreams and goals for their children, and learn laws and advocacy strategies that will help them help their children reach those goals. Parents of classified children and children who are having difficulty in school but may not be classified also benefit from this training.

Developing an IEP (Individualized Education Program) for Achievement
Families are introduced to their role in developing and implementing an effective Individualized Education Program for their children with special needs. This workshop provides a step-by-step overview of the IEP process and demonstrates how families can participate as equal partners in that process. Useful parent tools including the Positive Student Profile and the IEP worksheet are disseminated. Families also learn about the federal requirements for IEPs, and the mandate that they participate as equal partners in IEP development.
